About EMBL

EMBL is an intergovernmental organisation with twenty-one Member States, two Associate Member States – Argentina and Australia, and three Prospect Member States – Slovak Republic, Hungary and Poland. It promotes scientific training, cutting edge research, innovation and technology transfer in the broad spectrum of molecular biology, concentrating its activities in five outstations: Hinxton (EBI, European Bioinformatics Institute), Grenoble (Structural Biology), Heidelberg (Main Laboratory), Hamburg (Structural Biology) and Monterotondo (Mouse Biology).

In the framework of the Argentinian Associate Membership to EMBL, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation (MINCYT) encourages collaboration with EMBL by promoting preferential access to EMBL facilities and laboratories; participation in research infrastructure projects; granting of doctoral and postdoctoral degrees; organization of courses, workshops and trainings; involvement of Argentinean institutions in activities developed by enterprises linked to EMBL.

Overview

This Workshop will introduce participants to the services and facilities in Structural Biology made available by the EMBL Grenoble and Hamburg Outstation and also at the Structural and Computational Biology Research Unit in EMBL Heidelberg.

EMBL Grenoble and EMBL Hamburg develop instrumentation and operate beamlines for macromolecular crystallography and small-angle scattering of biological samples, but also pursue ambitious in-house research programs. These technologies are used to solve the structures of multifunctional proteins and protein complexes of biomedical relevance.

The EMBL Structural and Computational Biology Unit pursues an ambitious research programme in integrated structural systems biology and a far-reaching computational component that bridges into various areas of biology.

The workshop will address questions regarding the use of structural biology facilities at EMBL and will provide an overview using specific examples how to tackle problems at different ranges of spatial resolution, connecting atomic structures and dynamic information obtained by X-ray crystallography and NMR with medium-range resolution from single particle electron microscopy, and cellular imaging obtained by electron tomography and light microscopy.

 Workshop objectives

  • Increase the understanding of the research activities of EMBL structural biologists and the structural biology facilities available at EMBL Heidelberg and at the EMBL Outstations Grenoble and Hamburg.
  • Illustrate good practices and examples of how these resources can be used by researchers from Argentina.
  • Explore fields of interest for future collaboration.

Participants

The workshop is targeted towards the entire community of researchers in structural biology working at Argentinian universities; research, development and innovation centres; and technology platforms.

Registration

Up to sixty (60) Argentinian researchers will be able to participate. Those interested should complete the attached registration form and send it to embl@mincyt.gob.ar before February 9, 2015. MINCYT will finance travel and accommodation for up to 10 (TEN) researchers not residing in Rosario city, according to the Terms and Conditions of the Call to Participate in the EMBL Workshop in Structural Biology. Beneficiaries will be automatically enrolled.
