Development of methods and tools for data integration that contribute to the quality of vegetables for human consumption

Summary of the technology offered

A group of researchers from the Laboratory of Metabolism and Signaling in Plants has developed the experience and ability to integrate genetic, phenotypic and metabolic data of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), used as a model plant to determine the aroma, flavor, antioxidants content, and shelf life.

The same research group has developed expertise in the evaluation of different cultivars in relation to susceptibility to chilling injury after refrigerated storage of fruits. The influence of cold storage on the transcriptome, metabolome and proteome was further evaluated in tomato fruits using current technological advances in this field, to understand at the molecular level the changes in the fruits at each stage of conservation.

Brief description of the technology offered

The studies are based on conventional techniques: biochemistry and molecular biology, gas and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC- MS and LC- MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of protons (1H -NMR). The knowledge generated is applicable to the valorization and improvement of other plant products.

Application domain

  • Fruit and vegetable production.
  • Development of new transport procedures of fruits and vegetables.
  • Development of new packaging for transport (insulation and protection of goods).

Advantages

This study aims to:

  • Restore and enhance the value of autochthonous genetic resources.
  • Improve production standards of tomato, fruits and vegetables in our country.
  • Recover and valorize native genetic resources.
  • Replace foreign seeds for domestically produced seeds.
  • Introduce new wild varieties and landraces with the characteristics studied to the national production.
  • Reduce post-harvest losses by cooling and use of chemicals.
  • Develop new technologies to prevent cold damage.

State of development

Tested in the laboratory: characterization of wild varieties and landraces.

State of intellectual property

Secret know-how.

Details of potential operating or partnership agreements

  • Technical cooperation: 1) for improvement plans and introduction of new landraces and wild varieties with the studied characteristics in the national production. 2) for post-harvest losses reduction.
  • Joint Venture.
  • ATechnical support.
